Wellbeing Update from Jen Gold and Nigel Holdsworth, Wellbeing Committee Leaders

What do we really want for our students?
In asking groups of parents what they want most for their children, one is likely to hear answers such as happiness, success, love and good health. We also want those things for our students at AISC and, as such, have Wellbeing as a strategic pathway in our Futures Planning.

By intentionally nurturing a culture of wellbeing in school, students learn valuable life skills, providing them with an increased capacity to learn and a strong foundation on which to create their own pathway towards a successful life.

Wellbeing Work at AISC
Over the last three years, many community members have contributed their energy and ideas to create a vision for Wellbeing at AISC.

We believe Wellbeing is a combination of feeling good and functioning well. Knowing and taking care of yourself, making positive choices and helping others enables one to flourish. Our Wellbeing approach will promote and foster healthy habits, self-awareness, self-management, and positive relationships in an effort to create a culture of Wellbeing in our school community.

Measure What You Treasure
As we move forward with this approach at AISC, we believe that bringing attention to this important topic and examining the impact our actions have on student Wellbeing is crucial. To this end, we will be conducting a survey of students in grades 5-12 using the Wellbeing Profiler, which was developed by the University of Melbourne.

This survey will take place in late November and more information will be given in the coming weeks regarding this important endeavor.

EAL Shout-out!
Ah, dictation. Call me old fashioned, but there can always be a time and place for a good, whole class dictation activity/lesson. Good dictation can encompass all four language skills: Students listen to the words. Students speak for clarification. Students write the words. Students read to self-check. Dictation can be used as a quick check on student progress. The instructor can “gain insight into the strengths and weaknesses of each student,” (Alkire, 2002) and plan subsequent lessons accordingly.

Some benefits of dictation
  • Dictation has real world applications: phone messages, bus schedules, etc.
  • Dictation can be viewed as developing note taking skills.
  • Dictation exercises student’s short-term memory.
  • Dictation can be used at any language level.
  • Small classes or large classes, dictation can be an incredibly engaging activity.
  • Students can self correct. (adapted from Alkire, 2002)

Dictations are great filler activities. If you find yourself with extra time at the end of a lesson, dictate the key points or lesson objectives. Even better, have student dictate to each other! It's a quick activity that has real life implications.

P.S. And, don't worry! We haven't forgotten about the co-teaching infographic. Just putting some finishing touches on it... Stay tuned!
