“When the goal is to foster inquiry, risk-taking, persistence, and
self-directed learning, culture is too important to leave to chance. Building the right culture for PBL requires
ongoing effort and attention by both teachers and students.” –Suzie Boss

EAL Shout-out!
Greetings, AISC! I’ve missed you! (I know… too many exclamation points, again! My apologies.)
So, as some of you may have noticed, my first day back to AISC was just this past Monday. I was fortunate enough to attend an amazing Reading and Writing Project workshop at Teachers College the week of 14 January: The Power and Risk of Scaffolds for English Language Learners Institute: A focus on fiction reading, grades K-5. Now I know, some of you may be thinking, “Grades K-5… what does this have to do with me?” Well, I’ll tell ya! Several of the ideas presented at this workshop can be modified to meet the needs of ELLs in any classroom. And, I plan to share these ideas over the coming EAL Shout-outs!
Some things that really caught my attention for the AISC student include:
- The power of gestures
- Organizing small groups and some activities that might go with each group
- Areas of scaffolding
- Teaching vocabulary
- How to “coach” our students
Be on the look-out these coming weeks. I plan to share all of these pearls with you, one at a time.
Happy Friday!
Peace-
Sarah
