“Teachers who use inquiry-based methodologies have a firm belief in the transformative power of ownership.  When students feel they are the ones ‘doing the learning’ rather than the teacher ‘doing the learning to them’ they are undoubtedly more engaged, and with engagement comes increased potential for learning.”  -- Kath Murdoch

EAL Shout-out!

In the ongoing conversations surrounding co-teaching at AISC, there seems to be a re-occurring question, “what is the best instructional model to present xyz content?” For those who are asking that very questions, here’s something that might interest you:

By clicking on this link, you’ll find 7 co-instructing models supported by the research of by Dove and Honigsfeld, the first one being “one teach; one support”. But every time you sit down to co-plan, maybe wonder… is this the best model for what you are trying to accomplish? Maybe “team teaching” or “parallel teaching” is a better approach. To really focus on the needs of individual students, try a “workshop” model which allows for small groups, pair work, and independent activities all at the same time! As you go deeper in your understanding of these models, please remind yourselves, form (the model) will always follow function (the activity).

As an FYI, this is just a piece of a bigger resource coming your way soon. Hopefully before our March break, we will be sharing a complete Collaborative Teaching Cycle resource for our co-teaching teams. This new resource goes into greater detail than the one-page document shared before the end-of-year holiday. This new infographic will go into greater detail around co-planning, co-instructing, co-assessing, and co-reflecting in a very user-friendly way. Be on the lookout!

Enjoy your long weekend!
Peace-
