The AISC Student Success Framework

The start of school makes me think of so many aspects of education, mostly it makes me think of student success.  Student Success is created by making our mission come alive.  Success also can come in many forms. We at AISC believe success can happen for all students when teaching and learning is student-centered. We focus our educational model on the attributes that make up the Vision for an AISC Learner. Learning can also happen in multiple areas for students. The Student Success Model showcases the Five Realms of Learning. If we as educators do our work well, we will send students into the world with a sense of inquiry, environmental responsibility, wellbeing, and inspiration to continue to learn.

AISC maximizes student learning through a coherent system of shared language, purpose, and understanding with everything we do at AISC Inquiry, Language Development, Internationalism, Vision for an AISC Learner.  These are connected to our curricular standards.  Our standards are the building blocks through which we intentionally instruct and assess students.

The Standards are:

  • Research and evidence-based
  • Clear, understandable, and consistent
  • Aligned with college and career expectations
  • Based on rigorous content and application of knowledge through higher-order thinking skills
  • Built upon the strengths and lessons of current United States standards
  • Informed by other top-performing countries in order to prepare all students for success in our global economy and society.

We are standards-based but we are also incorporating inquiry, internationalism with which we teaching through.  Using the mission as our north star.  More on the standards AISC uses next week in the Raptor Way Blog.  For now, thank you for your contribution to student success.  I appreciate how intentional and impactful your work is!

Wednesday, August 12 Faculty Meeting

To follow up on Wednesday’s curriculum meeting conducted by C5 (The Curriculum 5): DTL, ES Curriculum Coordinator, EY Curr. Coordinator, IB/AP Curr. Coord, and TBD Secondary Curr. Coor.

The purpose of the meeting was to review the Curriculum Development Cycle and Phases and to introduce new documents focused on the curricular documentation process: AISC Curriculum Documentation Process, Curricular Program Change Form, and Decision Making Matrix. Please review these documents and let me know what questions you may have HERE.

Teams will want to focus on the ACTION phase (this section includes: unit mapping, common assessments, and learning activities that incorporate targeted instructional strategies) of the Curriculum Cycle this year unless you are in a Curriculum Development Cycle (PE, Performing Arts).

Guiding Questions from Wednesday's Faculty Meeting answered in break out groups:

1.     What is the major work (goals) of the Vertical Team/curriculum area?* --- Unit Mapping, Common Assessments, Learning Activities?

2.     What data, student behavior, OR new research shows you this should be the major work of the Vertical Team / Curricular area? What informs your answer?

*ES will be working on curriculum development in Science and Social Studies this year. We believe that focusing on documentation of Science and Social Studies will help maintain familiarity with these content areas since the priority this year is on literacy and math. It will also support our readiness for the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.

Below are the dates to guide your work:

1.     August 12: ideate specific curricular documentation goals

2.     September 2: HODs/GTLs will continue to work on completion of SMART goal

3.     September 7: SMART goal(s) are finished in the graphic organizer.

4.     LT4/C5 will review SMART goals and provide feedback.

Further details on completing the Curriculum Documentation Vertical Team SMART GOALS 2020-2021 TEMPLATE and facilitation will follow next week.  A SMART GOALS worksheet will also be provided for the September 2 work time.

Remember Nancy’s parting thought from Marcus Aurelius

Frightened of change?

But what can exist without it?

What’s closer to nature’s heart?

Can you eat food without transforming it?

Can any vital process take place without something being changed?

Can’t you see it?

It’s just the same with you…
