Welcome Back!

All,

Welcome back and I hope you had a great break! As begin to refocus into our professional lives, here are a few updates from the Office of Teaching and Learning.

Wednesdays Oct. 12

To accomplish the necessary goals of creating a sustainable institutional memory, demonstrating our balanced course of study, allowing teachers time to do the necessary collaborative planning work, October 12 and early release on October 19 will be dedicated curricular work time to allow teams and academic departments meet the scope and sequence requests by December 7 (formerly was Nov. 23). Team Leaders and Heads of Department will be meet with their groups individually and sharing the individual agendas base on the objectives they would like to meet.  Administrators and coaches will be available during the after-school time to support various groups.  I hope this dedicated time will be productive. Look for a detailed agenda from your team leader or department head regarding the objectives during your curricular work time.

Below are the objectives to meet during the curricular work time on Oct. 12, 19  and December 7:

Objective 1: update course descriptions (ES will only do grade level Language Arts)
Objective 2: update unit descriptions (ES will start with Language Arts Units)

Objective 3: update Atlas unit titles up through the end of December

Objective 4: update Atlas with aligned assessment titles through the end of December

Objective 5: update Atlas with enduring understandings through the end of December

Objective 6: update Atlas with essential questions through the end of December

cNet Teams

A quick reminder of the cNet Teams that are now in progress.

The goal of the cNet Team is to initiate thoughtful, strategic, collaborative and intentional evolution of our curriculum and instructional centers as an essential component to continuing to build a relevant school committed to excellence. The purpose of this network is to support the work of leaders and practitioners in the on-going process of curriculum development. This network drives the curriculum development process, the professional learning agenda of the school, and proposes provocative possibilities for future work in these areas. This network is led by the Director of Teaching and Learning and is composed of leaders in curriculum and instruction from across the school including the cCore (Director of Teaching and Learning, the Associate Principals, and the Service Learning Coordinator).

Social Studies Curriculum Review Team
Led by Walter Basnight, this networking team will continue the AISC Curricular Cycle work in progress.  Phase 1 includes continual work on current standards, methodologies, resources and best practices. Designing a year-long implementation is also part of the vertical content team.  Necessary professional development needs are identified and planned. (PHASE 1 of Curriculum Development and Review Process).

English/Language Arts Curriculum Review Team
Led by Pepper MacFarlan, this networking team focuses on evaluation and study to research and discuss any changes to content standards, methodologies and best practices.  This Study Team will evaluate resources in preparation for the Plan Year (PHASE 5 of Curriculum Development and Review Process).

Student Wellness Team
Led by Meg Jones.  As a part of the strategic plan AISC, this networking team will plan for and implement an integrated student wellness program at every grade level. This end result will be a priority focus for two year.  This year 6 - 8 volunteers will research existing student wellness programs to make recommendations.

Curricular Vision Team
Led by Shari Abbott, this Network Team will research, discuss, and draft what we talk about when we talk about curriculum.  Paramount to the conversation is deciding how best to demonstrate for teachers how the pieces of our curriculum fit together.  A willingness to research and think about curriculum design, pedagogy, instruction, and assessment are necessary.  Additionally, individuals will be required to visualize how UbD, inquiry, design thinking, and project-based learning integrate into school-wide, curricular maps.

Inquiry Team
Led by Lorna Paterson, this team will examine the role of the Inquiry teacher, unpack content from concepts in standards and work with coaches to assist instruction in inquiry based pedagogy. To consolidate and implement the research from the Inquiry team last year, this years' team will look at strategies for practical implementation of inquiry-based learning across the school as well as highlight areas where this is already happening. The team will host practical, hands-on work sessions for teachers to both examine their own practice and unpack and reflect on the 'rubric for becoming an Inquiry based teacher'.
