“One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is a vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.”
- Carl Jung

The Learning Coaches Corner
Does money and travel prevent you from participating in all the professional development opportunities available to educators?

Here are some ways to participate from the comfort of your home and for free:

NSTA (National Science Teachers Association) is holds webinars for free to the public several times a year. The next webinar will focus on elementary and the life science DCI.

Target audience: Elementary School Educators
Date: Wednesday, September 20, 2017
Time: 6:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. CT / 4:30 p.m. MT / 3:30 p.m. PT
Duration: 90 minutes
Another great way to gather resources is to participate in Twitter Chats. Every morning between 4:30-8:30 you can participate in several chats related to science, NGSS, Inspirational teaching, Teach Like a Pirate, educational coaching, Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project, etc. Here is a schedule for all the twitter chats related to education. These are my personal favorites: #tlap, #educoach, #ngsschat, #edtechchat, #pblchat, #LEADlap, #TCRWP, #adechat, #sschat, #formativechat, #scitlap
Another one of my favorite resources for online PD is ASCD. Some of the archived webinars are free to the public and they get the big name experts in our field.
Here are some of my favorites:
Cultivating Curiosity in Your Classroom, Wendy Ostroff (I know this was a book club last year)
Teaching in the Fast Lane, Suzy Pepper Rollins

Sometimes webinars can be early in the morning but if you register for them, they will send you a recording.
Also to help organize all these opportunities, I like to use a time converter.

Happy Learning!
Hilary

Also, David Hassler (Sarah Hassler’s husband) sent me a blog post from a friend back in the US who does presentations live and via Skype for schools on the topic of dog sledding and the Iditarod Dog Sledding Race. Karen competed in the Iditarod sled dog race I think 2 or 3 times and she does a great presentation with her dogs for elementary schools. She has a thrilling story of falling through the ice into a creek on the race at something like midnight, all alone, and how her dogs pulled her out! If you are interested in talking to Karen, reply to LINK HERE

Have a great week!
