EAL Shout-out!
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been thinking about language learning vs language acquisition lately. And then, well rebounded researcher, Judie Hayes posted a blog about it last week! In this blog, she rightfully quotes Stephen Krashen (1988):
Language acquisition does not require extensive use of conscious grammatical rules, and does not require tedious drill. Acquisition requires meaningful interaction in the target language – natural communication – in which speakers are concerned not with the form of their utterances but with the messages they are conveying and understanding.
Simply put, language learning is grill & drill; language acquisition is explore & discover (very inquiry-based, don’t you think!?). As a language school, AISC embraces language acquisition through our inclusion and co-teaching models. To be honest, I’m sure you are already engaging students in language acquisition activities in your classroom already.
- Trivia Games: To keep it fair, I would create trivia questions based on what they have learned in class. Some suggestions – ask students what another student’s personal narrative was about; have students explain why there are more hours of daylight in the summer months, etc.
- Joke Telling: Humor is a challenge in any language, let alone an L2. Print out a list of jokes/puns and have students read them to one another. If no one laughs, someone has to explain why it’s funny.
- Let the Students be the Teacher: One of the best ways to learn something is to teach it. At the start of a unit, set up stations around the room and have students teach new concepts to each other before diving into instruction. You might want to plan a structured jig-saw activity to get students prepared.
And for homework… Have students watch English movies (with or without subtitles) and listen to English music. If time allows, have the student perform their favorite English song as a lip-sync or act out their favorite movie scene. It’s a great way to build a student’s confidence while taking risks.
Have a great long weekend!
peace-
Sarah

Worthwhile Reading
At a recent Coaching Collaborative Meeting, Learning Coach Walter Basnight shared the following article Advanced Paraphrasing from the The Cognitive Coaching Advanced Guide to pose the following questions:
- In what ways might these various types of paraphrases support/mediate the thinking of the coachee?
- How do you decide what type of paraphrase to use in a coaching conversation?
- What ways have you found to improve your paraphrasing?
