EAL Shout-out!
How about a simple grammar activity for this last Friday in November? What I call Pictures and Propositions, has changed into various learner activities all around the work. It’s even been turned into a purchasable game! But who needs to pay US$29.99 when all you need is paper and pencil!? This activity can be used at all grade and proficiency levels. Here’s how:
Set-up
- Break students into groups of 10 and sit each group in a circle.
- Each student must have a blank sheet of white paper, a pen/pencil, and something to write on.
- Students should put their initials at the bottom right corner of their paper to know it’s theirs.
Game Plan
- To start, each student writes a sentence in a particular tense, such as present continuous. (You can even be more specific: The sentence must be present continuous, have a prepositional phrase but be no more than 10 words.)
- Next, students pass their paper to the person sitting at their left. It is very important that all students pass the paper at the same time, so that no student ever has more than one piece of paper at any given time.
- On their neighbor’s paper, students must draw a small picture under the sentence that represents the original sentence. It’s very important that the picture be small because, once the picture has been drawn, the student folds over the paper to hide the sentence.
- Next, the paper is passed to the next student on the left.
- The next student (note: this should be the third person in the progression) is to write a sentence based on the picture drawn. The student should not see the original sentence. Once this new sentence is created, everyone folds over the paper to hide the picture so the only thing showing is the latest sentence,
- Pass the paper to the person on the left.
- Now, we are drawing again. Students should then draw a picture of the new sentence. Once complete, fold the paper and pass…the next student writes a sentence and so on: sentence – picture – sentence – picture – etc. until the paper returns to its original owner. Remember to pass papers simultaneously. Occasionally remind students of the sentence constraints.
Analysis
Once the paper gets back to its original owner, s/he can unfold the paper and read/see how his/her sentence was manipulated. Have students share with their elbow partner as well as some of the students can share with the whole class. As for the speaking part of this activity, have students explain how they think the original transformed. What evidence do they see in the pictures and new sentences that make them think that way?
If you do find a time to use this activity, drop me a line. I’d love to know how it goes.
peace-
Sarah
