Shout-out!
Greetings from sunny and rainy Bangkok! Chandini
and I are attending a 4-day WIDA workshop. Here’s what we’ve learned: WIDA.
More than just a test. Who knew?! More on what we learned her next week.
For this week, I thought it might be good to
share some tell-tale signs of language growth. So, as you read this list, think
of one of our beginning ELLs and consider… Have you seen a/an
·
Increased length of utterances (oral or written phrases and
sentences)
·
Greater variety of utterance patterns
·
Broader choice of words and greater awareness of their
appropriateness to convey intended meaning
·
Increased comprehensibility of the ideas being communicated
·
Increased appropriateness of the level of
formality (register) to audience and occasion
·
Decreased use of hesitation phenomena (ah, hm, er…)
·
Reduced use of filler expressions (stuff like that, you know)
and formulaic phrase characteristics students display
·
Increased stamina in reading and writing
As we start the second quarter of the year, we
can assume that our ELLs have moved passed their initial 2019-20 WIDA scores.
With that being said, they may not be improving at an equal speed in all skill
areas, but improvement is happening. Take a moment to reflect on each student’s
progress since the start of the year. Maybe even rearrange the names on your
Can Do Indicator sheets. Most important: praise those students who are
improving. They’d love to hear it from you.
Peace-
Sarah
