Thanks Eric Hudson of Global Online Academy (GOA) for this application of wayfinding: "As teachers, we are no longer needed as the the source of all content and knowledge in the classroom, but we are more necessary than ever when it comes to designing experiences that allow our students to find their own way."
You are all doing great work and I am so thankful for your diligence to provide a continuity of instruction to our students. I am comforted to remind myself, our school buildings are closed, but school is not closed. This is an important distinction. Our schools are the communities that come together for teaching and learning and sharing life. The buildings are just the buildings. School is still in session!
Please do reach out to me if you have any questions on curriculum, instruction, or assessment. Also, know I am available to help as a guest teacher, a mystery reader, or a thought partner. Email, call, or text I am here for you so you can be here for our students.

EAL Shout-out!
Greetings from Palavakkam! I having a wonderful first week of #AISCvirtual #AISCatHome. Aren’t you!? With such a huge learning curve, I’m sure we are all experts in online teaching after week 1.
For the next few weeks, I’ll be offering offer a few suggestions on making sure our ELLs can participate to their fullest potential in a virtual classroom.
- Provide multiple pathways for students to thrive. Because of all the cultural background students bring to class, providing a choice board that supports their multilingual backgrounds.
- Allow students to show their work through graphics! Google Drawing, Piktochart, and Buncee are great resources.
- Simple English Wikipedia uses, just as the title indicates, simpler English to convey content. On the left column, you’ll notice the variety of languages students can use to read the text!
- Outside of Google Suite, Microsoft has something called Immersive Reader. This resource is embedded into Microsoft Word and simply reads texts to students.
- To read more about these suggestions, visit WIDA’s Guiding Principles of Language Development.
I’ll be having a Virtual EAL Coffee next week to highlight some of the ways parents can support ELLs in a virtual classroom. Feel free to join us, if you’d like. Last, I am available at any time to talk thru lesson ideas. Please reach out!
Peace-
Sarah
