“Invest in relationships. Life is hard. None of us has the strength to do it alone. We need people to encourage and inspire us so we can encourage and inspire others.” -- Simon Sinek

Professional Growth and Evaluation UPDATE Spring 2020
In order to better support teachers and their work with Virtual Learning, you will have a choice on how to complete the Professional Growth and Evaluation Plan for this academic year. This is intended to help you with your commitments, rather than being an additional ask. Instead of commenting on your annual goals (which may or may not have been altered by our VL environment), you can choose to write a reflective letter to yourself (pre-COVID-19) articulating your insights from Continuity of Instruction. This has been a monumental event, hopefully some reflection will offer a sense of closure for you as you take care of your own wellbeing during this event.
Please indicate to your supervisor the option you will choose and do your best to submit your paperwork between April 24th and May 8th .
Option one:
Reflect on your experience with online learning by writing a casual reflective letter of 500 - 1000 words to yourself with one of the following prompts:
What do you (as an AISC educator) know now about teaching online in a crisis that you wish you knew before you started on March 23?
Or
How have you (as an AISC educator) grown professionally since embarking on virtual learning on March 23?
You will then meet with your supervisor for a short reflective conversation. In turn your supervisor will respond with a short reflection.
Option two:
Continue with your professional goals as stated earlier this year.
You will then meet with your supervisor for a professional growth conversation. In turn, your supervisor will comment on the completion of your goals.
Strands Professional Learning Survey
Developed by Learning Coaches and the Teaching and Learning Leadership, the purpose of the Professional Development Strands is to create personalized and relevant professional learning during dedicated time. The Strands were created as a partnership with AISC Leadership and Learning Coaches for teaching faculty to have time for deep understanding of an educational topic with a consistent group of colleagues.
Feedback on this year’s Strands and comments for next year, please fill out the Strand Survey LINK HERE by April 20

- Individualize the list including which of the AISC PDL events in which you specifically participated
- Include the number of hours per event. Example: Adaptive Schools--40 HOURS
- Share it with me with your name on the list
- I will have it printed on letterhead, stamped, and signed
- You pick it up at the DTL Office
This is a great way to stay up to date on your continuing education recertification hours. Please submit all requests for transcripts by 8:00 AM on June 1 for a signature. Those received after June 1, can pick up transcripts at the start of next year.
EAL Shout-out!
Even in a virtual environment, we need to intentionally integrate multiple modalities of communication, i.e. oral, written, visual, and kinesthetic. We can do this by weaving modalities together in a given activity. For example:
- Students read a text and give a video reply.
- Student 1 complete a writing assignment and gives it to Student 2. S2 records the writing assignment and sends S1 the link. S1 listens to the recording and corrects errors.
- And now… there’s something called AppSmashing (when you use multiple apps to create a project). Choose a topic! Students can read about that topic on ReadWorks, watch a video about that topic on Youtube, take notes on Google Docs, use the voice-to-text feature in Otter to write a script, and record the script for their animated video about the topic on Adobe Spark.
Just some thoughts…
And, this next Tuesday, 21 April is another EAL Strategy Talk! This Talk will focus on Translanguaging at AISC, specifically: What parts of translanguaging do we do well? What parts may not be a good fit for us and our students? How are students possibly using translanguaging in a virtual environment? These questions and many more will be answered next Tuesday!
When: Tuesday, 21 April 2020, 7:30-8:15am

Hope to see you there!
