One recurring topic in these COVID-19 times is, what trends in education we will see continue in virtual learning.  In my writing, A Love of Learning, I discuss the forward-facing trends in teaching and learning.  Below are some of the highlights of my thought-piece.

Virtual Learning is:
  • An opportunity to teach and learn together, building agency differently
  • Establishing a structure for awareness of expectation and availability
  • A methodology that requires teacher and student agility
  • A way to always stay connected
  • An example of authentic technology and a way to stay mobile
  • A new normal of teaching alongside

Please give it a read! If my thoughts generate any ideas, questions, or concerns, please reach out. I'd love to have more community thought partners around virtual schooling.  This is the last in a three-part series.  Thank you for reading, I have loved hearing your thoughts!

EAL Shout-out!

As we bring the 2019-20 school year to a close, parents might be asking… How can my student maintain the significant English language progress s/he has made this year? Here are some suggestions:
  • Read, read, read! This can be approached in various ways:1) read a book in the L1 and talk about it in English, 2) read a book in English and talk about it in L1, or 3) read an English book and talk about it in English.
  • Sing English karaoke songs!
  • Watch TV or movies in English with subtitles.
  • Create a list of language cognates and “false friends”.
  • Join an English book club.
  • Read a piece of fiction in both languages, then complete a Venn Diagram to compare & contrast.
  • Research historical events in multiple languages. Then ask yourself: What’s the same? What’s different?

All that being said, it is important to remember, the stronger a student’s L1 is, the easier it is for him/her to learn a second language. Home is the best place for L1 support. It would be wonderful if all homes have a variety of L1 books, magazines, music, etc. around the house.

Stay safe. Stay healthy. Stay happy. Drop me a line if I can help with anything!
Peace-
Sarah
