AISC International Mindedness and UN International Peace Day - AISC Parade of Nations, September 13
Each year the International Day of Peace is observed around the world on 21 September. We at AISC celebrate International Day of Peace earlier this year on September 13 we will once again host a parade of nations on Friday.
You will hear about AISC’s Parade of Nations during the September 4th All Faculty Meeting. Let me take this time to share with information on the UN International Peace Day and this year’s UN International Peace Day theme.

2019 Theme: “Climate Action for Peace”

This year’s theme draws attention to the importance of combating climate change as a way to protect and promote peace throughout the world.
Climate change causes clear threats to international peace and security. Natural disasters displace three times as many people as conflicts, forcing millions to leave their homes and seek safety elsewhere. The salinization of water and crops is endangering food security, and the impact on public health is escalating. The growing tensions over resources and mass movements of people are affecting every country on every continent.

Sustainable Development Goal 13 “Climate Action” is a call for immediate action by all to lower greenhouse emissions, build resilience and improve education on climate change.
Affordable, scalable solutions such as renewable energy, clean technologies are available to enable countries to leapfrog to greener, more resilient economies.

In the lead up to UN International Peace Day at AISC starting on September 13 and the International Day of Peace on 21 September, the United Nations calls upon all to take action to tackle climate change. Every human is part of the solution - from turning off the lights to taking public transport, to organizing an awareness raising campaign in your community. The UN encourages you to share your ideas and activities with others through #PeaceDay and #ClimateAction.
Looking forward to continuing our commitment to international mindedness and creating climate action for peace together!  To learn more, go to https://www.un.org/en/events/peaceday/

Professional Learning Strands 2019-2020

Developed by Learning Coaches and the Teaching and Learning Leadership,  the purpose of the Professional Development Strands is to create personalized and relevant professional learning during the dedicated time.  The Strands were created as a partnership with AISC Leadership and Learning Coaches for teaching faculty to have time for a deep understanding of an educational topic with a consistent group of colleagues.

There will not be a Strand Roll Out presentation this year, individuals will sign up for Strands (if they are not in pre-determined cNet Curriculum Development committees) by early September. You may want to talk to your supervisor about how your Strand choice could complement your PG&E goals.

SIOP Professional Development
A blended learning approach

The Office of Teaching and Learning would like to offer a blended learning professional development opportunity to AISC teaching staff. The Center of Applied Linguistics (CAL) offers an online Sheltered Instruction Operations Protocol (SIOP) self-study for people who would like to learn more about this instructional framework. At the end of the blended learning program, participants will
·       Identify the characteristics of sheltered instruction and recognize the eight components of the SIOP model
·       Identify principles of second language learning in the classroom, and analyze the forms and functions of academic language in sheltered lessons.
·       Distinguish between content and language objectives while creating effective language objectives.
·       Create practical SIOP application and resource for the AISC population.

Interested participants are able to fulfill these commitments:
1.     Complete this survey of interest no later than Wednesday, 9 October. We may not be able to accommodate all who are interested, so registration will come on a “first come, first serve” basis.
2.     Complete the online program and the guided reflection by the end of January 2020, meaning you have 3 months to complete the course.
3.     Create a SIOP folder and download any content from the course you find useful or may reuse in the future.
4.     Share your certificate of completion and guided reflection with Sarah Sahr once you complete the program.
5.     Attend two Saturday morning, face-to-face session in order to unpack the online course.

CAL claims that this course “should take no more than five hours to complete all three modules.” However, to do the online course with fidelity, it might take more like 10 hours. The two Saturday, face-to-face session will be 22 February & 7 March 2020 from 8am-12pm.

AISC will take care of registration and covers all costs for AISC participants. If a participant does not fulfill the commitment outlined above, the participant will reimburse AISC the US$150 registration fee.

** This professional development opportunity will happen twice for the 2019-20 school year, once in the first semester and again in the second. Participants will be asked to identify their preference in the survey of interest.**

Peace-
Sarah
