EAL Shout-out!
I think we all want to create
positive conditions for language learning in our classrooms. To do this, we
must make sure students are physically, mentally, emotionally, and culturally
comfortable. Let me explain…
- The physical: Students should be able to have choice when deciding where to work. Thankfully, with the AISC redesign, most classrooms afford this kind of comfort.
- The mental: Students should be able to see connects between their prior knowledge (what they have) and new knowledge (what you share). This can be achieved when we keep Input – Intake - Output in mind when planning activities.
- The emotional: Students should be able to feel relaxed, optimistic, happy, and purposeful. Our Wellbeing Framework covers a lot of these variables in its 4 pillars (self-management, healthy habits, positive relationships & self-awareness).
- The cultural: Students should be able to express their identity through school work. The first line of our International Mindedness poster is, “Possessing a strong sense of one’s own cultural identity.” Brilliant!
Basically, what I’m saying is, AISC
has all the resources necessary to create robust language learning classrooms.
If you feel you are lacking one of these 4 branches of comfort, let me know.
I’m happy to point out the amazing work you are already doing and, possibly,
suggest some ways you might move forward. And, as always, enjoy the process.
Peace-
Sarah
