EAL Shout-out!
For the past months, I’ve been talking
a lot with Middle School teachers about “the language classroom”. Seeing as the
majority of our school population is ELLs, it’s important to remember all of us
are responsible for explicitly teaching the academic language needed to be
successful. In talking with several teachers, in all sections at AISC, here are
some suggestions on what a language classroom might look like:
- Students talking more often than the teacher
- Expecting a variety of outputs from student, all of which meet the objectives
- Rich in resources for students to use
- Full of learners who want to train each other in using resources
- Understanding the difference between a scaffold and a learning strategy
- Utilizing customized course materials (not textbooks)
- Keeping routines in check so they do not become mundane
- A variety of learning spaces - furniture is used for specific, desired impact
Take a moment to reflect on these
dot-points. What do you do well? What might you need to work on? I bet, as you
walk around your classroom and reflect, you see how academically rich in
language your discipline is. I bet you teach more academic language than you
give yourself credit for. Good on ya’ for doing so!
Have a great long weekend. Bring on
December!
Peace-
Sarah
