If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart. --Nelson Mandela

PD Request UPDATE
Given the shifting health landscape and the fluid air travel situation, if you plan to request to attend a professional development opportunity in February or March in any country with a documented coronavirus case, please have a conversation with your supervisor regarding the necessity of your travel plans.  Thank you in advance for your understanding.

EAL Shout-out!
What a great EAL Coffee this week! This week, 10 parents joined me for an EAL morning coffee. We spent time unpacking the differences (and similarities) between English Language Development and Academic Language Development. And, boy! Did we have a lot to talk about! Parents completed Venn Diagrams as well as sorted Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 Vocabulary & Syntax. More than that... we did a deep dive into CLIL, Content and language integrated learning. To be honest, it was a great time! The discussions were challenging and all in a good way. I am happy to report, our parents are flourishing with an EAL understanding! Here are the slides we shared and some pictures of them in action:

Our last EAL Coffee for the year is 30 April. I plan to give parents a variety of activities they can do over the summer with their students to keep the English alive! I don't know about you, but I simply cannot wait!

Cheers-
Sarah

Worthwhile Reading
Valentina Gonzalez asks a really good question: How do we identify gifted English learners? This article not only examines what gifted might mean, it also identifies some ways we can identify our gifted ELLs. As the article says, "Keep in Mind: English proficiency is not a prerequisite to giftedness."

Last but not least, congratulations! You made it to the end. And… Happy Valentine's Day! ♥ ♥ ♥
