EAL
Shout-out!
This past week,
I attended a CLIL workshop at the Seoul Foreign School (SFS). It was my first
visit to another international school of AISC's caliber and they were lovely
hosts. Dr. Virginia Rojas was the facilitator of this workshop and, although I
have known her as a colleague for years, this was the first time I was one of her
participants. This was a great opportunity for me and I am grateful to have
attended.
So, for 2
straight days, we talked about CLIL, Content and Language Integrated Learning.
This approach to teaching and learning is from the UK and is all about learning
content through an additional language thus teaching both the subject and the
academic language needed to be successful (sound familiar?). For us it
means English is our medium of instruction and assessment. And, even though we
may not adhere to the CLIL Four C Framework, I can see a lot of our work in it:
- Content:
Progression in acquiring knowledge, skills, and understanding.
- Communication:
Involving learners in language use.
- Cognition:
Engagement between thinking and understanding.
- Culture: To gain
"self" and "other" awareness.
As the workshop
progressed, I was constantly reminded of the good work we do at AISC. Whether
we are creating scaffolds, differentiating assessments, or personalizing
activities, AISC teachers continuously focus on the needs of the students.
Because of you, I was able to give many examples of AISC's good work at this
workshop.
So, this week's
EAL Shout-out! is to you. Thanks.
peace-
Sarah
